Designers fail to estimate the time that they need to design because they calculate the net time. In many professions experts calculate costs or revenue prediction leaving percentages for the unexpected.
After a while designers exaggerate and estimate a much longer time. Turning hours to days.
01. Go by 2-3 times.
If you think it will take an hour say Up to 3 hours. If a day, say 2 days, maybe 3.

02. Notify ahead. Tell the client you will update about the progress, telling whether it will take another day/hour.
03. Explain in short the design process.
